How to build savings using an auto pilot?
Recently I have been getting up around 5:30am in the morning a couple of mornings each week to go to the gym. The winter time with the cold mornings are always the hardest to get motivated – particularly as I walk to my car in a brisk 4 degree morning. In the early days of this routine, there was often a critical point where I would think to myself “Should I go back to bed or get up?” However as weeks passed by, I found it easier to not even give time and effort to really consider that point and simply just go on auto pilot. The next thing I knew I was at the gym. The hardest part I find with the gym is simply to maintain the consistency with regularly attending. Once I am there everything normally falls into place. When it comes to saving I think consistency is often the key to a successful result too. I often meet people and in my initial meeting and ask the question “Are you a able to save?” I find that most people fall into 2 camps: the savers and the non-savers. The interesting thing with wealth creations is in part it is just recognising what your strengths are and just simply playing to them on a regular basis. Normally people might say that a non-saver is doomed long term and a saver will be successful financially. I think it comes down to simply setting up a system to win. The key is getting it to the point where is just happens on auto pilot status. If you struggle with saving you just need to put your cash flow on an auto pilot status. This can be done by simply automating the strategy and by doing this removes the necessary decision making or questioning and frees up headspace to concentrate on things which are really more important. Just like when I was lying in bed trying to work out should I stay in the warm covers or should I go to the gym, simply removing the option all together can set you onto a winning path. Like most great ideas, this one might need to be altered to meet your situation but if you would like some help to develop a winning financial strategy, feel free to contact the AJ Financial Planning team and schedule a time to catch further.
